Moment Vole by Fragonard c1939

Moment Vole, also known as Stolen Moment(s), was created in 1939 by Fragonard. It was known as the "perfume of Stolen Moments of the young in heart and wise in fashion."

A 1948 newspaper article describes it as " a fragrance that symbolizes the sweet, heady, excitement of all stolen moments between lovers. It is a brew for the girl who is in love with love  if not in love with a man -yet! It is evocative of romantic dreams and suggests the elusive, haunting quality of love itself."'

Fragrance Composition:

So what does it smell like? Moment Vole is classified as a floral chypre fragrance for women.
  • Top notes: aldehydes, bergamot, black currant, raspberry, violet leaf, lemon
  • Middle notes: iris, jasmine, Damask rose, violet, carnation, galbanum
  • Base notes: benzoin, ambergris, musk, sandalwood, patchouli, tonka bean, vanilla, oakmoss

I am using a vintage 1940s bottle of Moment Vole for this review. The fragrance starts off with a burst of nose tickling aldehydes, blackcurrant, raspberry, and a lemony kick of bergamot,  resting on powdery iris mingling with the blossoms of jasmine, Damask rose, violet and spicy carnation. Oakmoss, violet leaves and galbanum keep the fragrance from smelling too sweet. A deep, oriental base is revealed in the dry down with animalic ambergris and musk, balsamic notes of vanilla, tonka bean and benzoin and finally, a precious woods fusion of patchouli and sandalwood.

Fate of the Fragrance:

Moment Vole has been discontinued for many years, but it seems Fragonard has reissued the scent, specially created for the Jean Honoré Fragonard museum.
