Volage by Neiman Marcus c1979

Volage by Neiman Marcus: launched in 1979.

VOLAGE. The mark "Volage" translated into English means "Fickle". First use Feb. 16, 1979; in commerce Oct. 5, 1979.




Volage was available in the following:
  • 0.08 oz Parfum in clear glass micro mini bottle with plastic stopper
  • 1/8 oz Parfum Splash in frosted bottle
  • 1/4 oz Parfum Splash in frosted bottle with butterfly stopper (mini replica of the larger size)
  • 1/4 oz Parfum Spray, clear glass cylinder with brass cap
  • 1 oz Parfum Splash in frosted bottle with butterfly stopper (with atomizer attachment)
  • 4 oz Eau de Toilette in frosted glass
  • Body Lotion
  • Perfumed Guest Soap
  • Porcelain pomander

Fragrance Composition:


So what does it smell like?A lot like Opium by Yves Saint Laurent! It is classified as an oriental perfume for women, with deliciously spicy, woodsy notes with a warm, rich vanilla base.
  • Top notes: cinnamon, cloves, carnation, pepper, mandarin orange, bay leaf, bergamot
  • Middle notes: opoponax, tolu balsam, labdanum, orris, patchouli, rose
  • Base notes: castoreum, amber, myrrh, cedar, incense, vetiver, vanilla, benzoin, sandalwood

Texas Monthly, 1983:
"Some things are unique in the world. N-M's very own Volage® And the woman who wears it. In perfume, eau de toilette and body lotion, 18.00 to 75.00."

  2. Thanks for your work - your site is incredible.

    I read about Volage on your site and blind bought a small bottle on eBay. It is the most GLORIOUS perfume I own. It may have a superficial resemblance to vintage Opium... a classic, spicy, oriental fragrance. However, Volage has NO sweetness. It's very green by comparison. I know it's not in the note pyramid here, but I detect a lot of oakmoss. Volage is kind of like a mug of piping hot, strongly brewed coffee with a splash of milk but no sugar. It'll put hair on your chest!!
