Armani by Giorgio Armani c1982

Armani by Giorgio Armani: launched in 1982 and marketed by Helena Rubinstein.

"A woman's most devastating weapon is invisible." Armani Fragrance. The secret weapon in the art of seduction."

The new Armani fragrance was introduced at a "private" luncheon of about 70 people, and held at Bloomingdales' president, Marvin Traub's swanky Manhattan apartment. A major launch party in New York to promote the fragrance was canceled. However, one in Paris went on as scheduled, complete with fireworks soaring over the Eiffel Tower, which some commented was the "Party of the Year."

A subdued public launch was held in Bloomingdales' cosmetic department where the designer attended a meet and greet with customers who could also receive a signed photograph. This was the start of a 10 day, four city US tour to launch th fragrance.

Already customers were clamoring for the new fragrance, propelling it towards success. "The figures in the first two to four weeks were beyond expectation," said Fred Purchase, executive vice president of Helena Rubinstein, the company who marketed the fragrance. "There is every indication that this will be one of the more successful fragrances launched in the last six to eight years," he said.

Armani was available in the following products:
  • 1/4 oz Parfum Purse Spray
  • 1/4 oz Parfum
  • 1/2 oz Parfum
  • 1 oz Parfum
  • 1.7 oz Eau de Toilette
  • 3.4 oz Eau de Toilette

Cosmopolitan, 1984:
" Simplifying, purifying, trimming down to the basic essence of style, Giorgio Armani has created a women's fragrance as exciting as his fashion. Now you can experience his latest creation."

Fragrance Composition:

So what does it smell like? It is classified as a floral chypre fragrance for women. An evanescent bouquet of jasmine, rose, orange blossom, hyacinth and lily of the valley. Fresh and spicy, rich and floral, animal, spiritual with green notes, fruity nuances layered over a woody base. It was reportedly created from over 80 different essences and starts off with a fresh green top, followed by a cool floral heart, resting on  mossy, woody base.
  • Top notes: aldehydes, green note, hyacinth, basil, coriander, pineapple, spearmint, galbanum, marigold and bergamot
  • Middle notes: cyclamen, orange blossom, tuberose, orchid, orris root, jasmine, lily-of-the-valley, rose and narcissus
  • Base notes: civet, vetiver, patchouli, chive, sandalwood, tonka bean, amber, musk, benzoin, oakmoss and cedar

Bottle:

Inspired by the rhythmic geometric patterns of Art Deco, the bottle designed by Pierre Dinand was a clear, pure block of sculpted glass adorned with vertical black lines. The bottle was manufactured by Pochet et du Courval with plastic components supplied by MBF Plastiques.

Fate of the Fragrance:

Discontinued, date unknown. Today, many retailers call this Armani Classic for Women, or Armani for Women.

Armani Eau Parfumée was launched in 1990 as a lighter version of the original Armani for women fragrance, it still contains some of the same notes. It is classified as a floral fragrance for women with an earthy facet.

  • Top notes: aldehydes, pineapple, galbanum, mint, bergamot
  • Middle notes: jasmine, lily-of-the-valley, narcissus, orchid, rose
  • Base notes: amber, benzoin, oakmoss

The production was apparently discontinued.
