Eden by Cacharel c1994

"Eden" by Cacharel is a distinctive fragrance that was launched in 1994. This perfume was created by the renowned perfumer Jean Guichard. "Eden" is known for its unique and lush scent profile, which combines fresh, floral, and aquatic notes, evoking the imagery of a verdant, exotic garden. The fragrance is often appreciated for its complex blend, which includes notes of peach, bergamot, mimosa, orange blossom, melon, pineapple, and patchouli, among others. This rich combination makes "Eden" a memorable and enduring scent in the world of perfumery.

"Eden" by Cacharel, launched in 1994, was aimed at the same young women who enjoyed "Anaïs Anaïs" but desired something lighter and different. Reflecting the fashion trends of the time, it featured greener top notes and fruity undertones. Cacharel marketed "Eden" as the world's first "floral-oriental-aquatic bouquet." The fragrance incorporated watery notes such as water lily and lotus, enhanced with a fresh, juicy melon undertone. Jean Guichard, the creator of "Eden," emphasized the significance of water, stating that it is the beginning of everything, which is why it was placed at the heart of this fragrance.

Press material (in italics) invites us to
"an enchanted garden. Imagine Paradise...a haven of surreal and idealized nature filled with flowers laden with perfume, warm scented breezes, luscious fruits, babbling streams and crystal clear waterfalls. This idyllic location is the garden of EDEN- the new female fragrance from Parfums Cacharel."

This evocative description captures the essence of "Eden," promising an experience akin to entering a paradise filled with sensory delights. It paints a vivid picture of a utopian garden, perfectly aligning with the fragrance's lush and multifaceted scent profile, which blends floral, oriental, and aquatic notes to create an otherworldly olfactory experience.

The spirit of EDEN, a name identical in every language, recalls a universal story of innocence and temptation which originated long ago and yet heralds the beginning of a new and exciting era for Cacharel. The natural sequence to the continuing story of Anais Anais and Loulou, EDEN is the 'forbidden fragrance' of dreams and imagination and a sensuous expression of timeless femininity.

The spirit of "EDEN," a name identical in every language, recalls a universal story of innocence and temptation that originated long ago. This narrative heralds the beginning of a new and exciting era for Cacharel. Following the natural sequence of the continuing stories of "Anaïs Anaïs" and "Loulou," "EDEN" emerges as the 'forbidden fragrance' of dreams and imagination, representing a sensuous expression of timeless femininity.

By invoking the name "Eden," Cacharel taps into a deep, collective myth of an idyllic paradise, adding layers of meaning and allure to the fragrance. This connection to a universal story emphasizes "Eden" as a fragrance that transcends cultural boundaries, appealing to the shared human experience of beauty, desire, and mystery. It positions "Eden" as both a continuation of Cacharel's legacy and a bold step forward into new realms of olfactory artistry.

"Eden initiates the creation of a totally new olfactive family of "oriental-floral-aquatic', notes created by Jean Guichard for Givaudan-Roure. This new blend of freshness and sensuality highlights the originality of EDEN'S Eau de Parfum."

This innovative blend of freshness and sensuality highlights the originality of "Eden's" Eau de Parfum. By merging these diverse scent profiles, "Eden" stands out as a pioneering fragrance, offering a unique and captivating sensory experience that reflects Cacharel's creative spirit and dedication to pushing the boundaries of perfumery.

"Like a breath of fresh air, EDEN tempts the senses with aquatic perfume of waterlily, lotus and flowering rush. The tender notes of violet and heady orange flower then rise with the heat of the day, followed by the mellow and luscious juices of pineapple and melon. Aroused by the warmth of the sun, the soft yet intoxicating scents of mimosa and acacia combine to produce a radiant and floral heart, whilst the rare essence of patchouli leaf, revealed for the first time in EDEN, evokes sensuality and freshness."

For the launch of the fragrance, Cacharel decided to do something different and went with an environmentally friendly approach. Instead of the same old and tired (read: wasteful) of lavish champagne and ritzy lunches or extravagant dinner parties, would-be guests were sent an unexpected promotional offering in the form of a tree. As part of the Children of the Forests International scheme, all the VIPs had a tree planted in their name which was recorded in the International Tree Register.

After its introduction, "Eden" quickly became popular with its target market. Its eye-catching tropical paradise-themed scent and advertising gained significant recognition at the New Woman Beauty Awards held at the Langham Hilton in London in 1994. This exclusive luncheon marked the third anniversary of the annual and highly valued industry occasion. From over 1,000 products submitted for the awards, Cacharel garnered two prestigious accolades: one for Best New Fragrance of 1994 and another for Best New Advertising Campaign. These awards underscored the fragrance's appeal and the effectiveness of its promotional efforts.

Fragrance Composition:

So what does it smell like? It is classified as a fresh floral-oriental fragrance for women.
  • Top notes: peach, bergamot, lemon, tarragon, mandarin, water-lily, lotus and rush
  • Middle notes: ylang ylang, tuberose, jasmine, violet, lily of the valley, rose, orange blossom, pineapple, melon, orris and mimosa
  • Base notes: tonka, musk, oakmoss, vanilla, cedar, cassia, amber, patchouli and sandalwood

Jean Guichard incorporated an aromachemical called magnolione in the creation of "Eden," using about 0.7%. This compound imparts a scent reminiscent of magnolias. He also included a new aromachemical called Moxalone, further contributing to the fragrance's distinctive and innovative character. The blend of these diverse elements results in a scent that is both fresh and sensual, with aquatic, floral, and oriental facets.

"Moxalone" is an aromachemical known for its comfortable, soft, fruity, clean, powdery, and sensual notes. Its scent is often described as similar to the smell of skin. In fragrance formulation, it can add depth, warmth, and an intimate quality to a scent, enhancing its overall appeal and creating a more nuanced olfactory experience. When incorporated into perfumes, it can evoke a sense of intimacy and closeness, making it an intriguing addition to fragrances seeking to convey sensuality and allure.

Scent Profile:

In the Garden of Eden, the top notes greet you with a vibrant burst of scents and sensations. The sweet, juicy aroma of ripe peach mingles with the sparkling zest of bergamot and lemon, creating a citrusy symphony that dances in the air. The slight bitterness of tarragon adds a unique herbal twist, while the fresh, tangy mandarin contributes to the fruity delight. You catch a glimpse of water lilies and lotuses floating serenely on a crystal-clear pond, their aquatic floral scents adding a delicate, almost ethereal layer to the fragrance. Rushes sway gently in the breeze, their earthy, green notes grounding the composition. Birds chirp melodiously, and you feel the cool, smooth petals of the water lilies between your fingers.

As you venture deeper into the garden, the heart of the fragrance unfolds with an opulent bouquet of floral and fruity notes. Ylang-ylang’s exotic, sweet, and slightly spicy scent envelops you, blending seamlessly with the rich, creamy tuberose and the intoxicating aroma of jasmine. Violets add a soft, powdery touch, while the delicate scent of lily of the valley evokes purity and freshness. The classic, timeless fragrance of roses permeates the air, intertwined with the sweet, honeyed notes of orange blossom. Fresh slices of pineapple and melon offer a juicy, tropical nuance, their sweetness perfectly balanced by the earthy, slightly woody scent of orris. The mimosa, with its light, powdery and slightly green scent, completes the floral symphony. Bees buzz around, drawn by the nectar, and the sun filters through the lush canopy, casting dappled shadows on the soft grass beneath your feet.

In the garden’s deepest, most tranquil corners, the base notes reveal themselves, grounding the fragrance with a warm, sensual embrace. The sweet, creamy aroma of tonka bean blends with the musky, slightly animalistic scent of musk, creating an alluring base. The earthy, slightly damp scent of oakmoss intertwines with the rich, comforting warmth of vanilla and the woody, resinous notes of cedar. Cassia adds a hint of spiciness, while the deep, golden scent of amber provides a luxurious, almost honeyed richness. The earthy, dark, and slightly sweet scent of patchouli mingles with the smooth, creamy sandalwood, creating a harmonious balance. The air is filled with the rustling of leaves and the distant sound of a flowing stream, while the bark of ancient trees feels rough yet reassuring under your touch.

Bottle:

"Eden" is presented in a rounded, soft green opaline bottle with a gold orb-shaped stopper off-center, designed by Annegret Beier. The design of the rounded bottle was inspired by water and pebbles, aiming to evoke a sense of serenity and natural beauty. Each bottle resembles a tumbled stone of jade, agate, or marble, adding to its aesthetic appeal.

The manufacture of the celadon-hued flacon and its opaline stopper is unique due to an exclusive process of pigment blending. This process gives each bottle its irregular jade-like nuances, ensuring that every "Eden" bottle is one-of-a-kind. This attention to detail and craftsmanship further enhances the allure of the fragrance, making it not only a delight for the senses but also a beautiful object to display.

"Eden" was available in a variety of sizes to suit different preferences and needs:

  • 5ml Eau de Parfum mini
  • 15ml Eau de Parfum Purse Spray (in a suedine case)
  • 30ml Eau de Parfum Spray
  • 50ml Eau de Parfum Splash
  • 100ml Eau de Parfum Spray

This range of sizes allowed customers to choose the option that best fit their usage patterns and budget, ensuring that "Eden" was accessible to a wide range of consumers. Whether for travel or daily use, there was a suitable size available for everyone to enjoy the fragrance.

Eau d'Eden:

The popularity of "Eden" led to the creation of a flanker scent called "Eau d'Eden," which was launched in 1996. This fragrance, crafted by Jean Guichard, served as a lighter version of "Eden" and was composed as an eau de toilette. It was classified as an aquatic floral fragrance, offering a fresh and vibrant interpretation of the original scent. "Eau d'Eden" retained the essence of its predecessor while introducing new notes and nuances, catering to those who preferred a lighter and more refreshing fragrance experience.

Here's a breakdown of the notes in "Eau d'Eden":

  • Top notes: Cotton flower, water hyacinth, wild rockrose.
  • Middle notes: Sweet william, honeysuckle, orris, water jasmine, nectarine, peach, hyacinth.
  • Base notes: White musk, sandalwood, nasturtium leaves.

These notes create a fresh and floral fragrance with aquatic and green undertones, evoking a sense of natural beauty and tranquility. The combination of delicate floral notes with aquatic elements and a subtle musky base adds depth and complexity to "Eau d'Eden," making it a captivating scent suitable for everyday wear.

"Eau d'Eden" was inspired by water, the natural element upon which the existence of all living things depends. Its floral, fruity, and musky fragrance is a delightful blend that expresses unashamed femininity. Water hyacinth and nasturtium leaves lend freshness, while succulent fruits and sweet floral scents of peach, nectarine, wild rose, and sweet william provide a hint of sensuality. Gentle notes of white musk and sandalwood provide a subtle sensation of pure pleasure, completing the olfactory journey. This fragrance encapsulates the essence of nature's purity and femininity, offering a refreshing and uplifting experience reminiscent of a tranquil garden by a flowing stream.

Business Venezuela - Issue 186, 1996:
"Cacharel de Paris' new product "Eau D'Eden," says. This clear and luminous fragrance is inspired by the Garden of Eden, where beauty, exuberance, and purity intermingled in harmony."

"Eau d'Eden" was housed inside a clear glass bottle adorned with a silver and aqua-colored cap. This design choice likely reflected the fragrance's inspiration from water, with the aqua color symbolizing freshness and purity. The clear glass bottle allowed the fragrance to be visible, showcasing its delicate hue and inviting consumers to experience its refreshing scent. Overall, the packaging of "Eau d'Eden" mirrored the fragrance's light and airy character, making it a visually appealing addition to any dressing table or fragrance collection.

Fate of the Fragrance:

It seems that both "Eden" by Cacharel and its flanker "Eau d'Eden" have been discontinued, with the exact dates of discontinuation being unclear. However, "Eden" was still in production as late as 2003, and "Eau d'Eden" was likely discontinued prior to 2010. Despite their discontinuation, bottles of these fragrances can still be found online through various retailers and collectors.

How Old Is Your Eden Fragrance?

This guide was made specifically to help you date your Eden perfume, so the dates given will be after 1994, acknowledging the date the perfume was first introduced. For other Cacharel fragrances, check my blog.

  • Does it have a bar code? Your box should display a barcode by this time.
  • Does it have the "greendot" recycling symbol? Your box should display the green dot symbol by this time.
  • What is the address on the box? Your bottle/box should be marked with "16, place Vendome, Paris" as it dates to after 1992.
  • Who is the distributor? If your label or box is marked "distributed by Cosmair USA" this means it was used from 1994 to about 2000-2001. If it is marked "distributed by "Luxury Products LLC" then it dates from 2001 and onward.
  • How is the Cacharel logo designed on your box? If it is enclosed inside of an elongated ellipse, it dates from 1994 up to 2002-2003. If it is no longer enclosed, it dates to after 2003.
  • How is long is the ingredients list? Prior to 2004, a short list of ingredients appears, generally something like" "Ingredients: alcohol, water, fragrance." After 2004, a longer list of ingredients appears on the box. It was at this time, fragrance manufacturers were required to disclose ingredients used in their products. This is due to regulations imposed by IFRA in part to certain aromachemicals and natural ingredients classified as allergens or harmful.
  • Now remember, companies often tried to use up existing packaging stock even when introducing new packaging styles, so you may see overlapping of addresses, barcodes, etc.
  • Your bottle and box should be marked with a batch code denoting what year and month the product was made. From 1994, your Eden fragrance should display a five digit batch code.
