Alix signed Perfume Bottles c1920s

Alix appears to be the name of an enameler from France. This artist's name can be found signed on various antique French perfume bottles dating to the 1920s-1930s period. This artist also painted A Travers la Voilette by Isabey.

ON EBAY: Ambré des Pagodes by Lydes Perfume c1919

ON EBAY THIS WEEK: Ambré des Pagodes by Lydes Perfume Bottle from circa 1919. Bottle probably by SPV (Société Parisienne de Verreries) and not Viard. Lydes most famous presentation for this perfume featured a figural stopper on a fancy bottle, designed by Julien Viard and manufactured by Depinoix. The bottle shown in this listing is quite different and may either be a factice, or a dramming flacon for usage in the stores. I am unsure if it actually contains perfume inside as the seller says the stopper is frozen.

Ambre des Pagodes was still being sold until 1925, as I saw it still being advertised.

Parfumerie de Luxe, Lydes of 29 rue Auguste Bailly, Courbevoie (Seine) France, established in 1918 by Eugene Philippe Rodier. Their most successful perfume was their first, Ambre des Pagodes, which interestingly did not bear the name Lydes (sometimes). The company became well known practically overnight and exported their luxurious presentations worldwide:
  • 1919 L'Ambre des Pagodes
  • 1922 Narcisse
  • 1923 Les Jasmins de Lydes
  • 1925 Diamant Noir
  • 1925 L'Heure du Baiser
  • 1927 Bibelot
  • 1928 Dans la Chevelure
  • 1928 La Fleur du Lac
  • 1920s Arabian Passion

ON EBAY: Alienor by Rallet c1910 Perfume

ON EBAY THIS WEEK: Alienor by A. Rallet & Co, Perfume bottle, antique, c1900-1910. Gorgeous label.

Very rare piece, by Rallet. Rallet, founded 1843 in Moscow by Alphonse Rallet (1819–1894), had become, by 1900, Russia's preeminent manufacturer of fine perfume, soap, and cosmetics and was an official supplier to the royal courts of Russia, Persia, and Montenegro. In 1896 Rallet was purchased by Chiris of Grasse, France. When Rallet's Russian assets were nationalized in 1917, the company was reestablished in France. In 1920, Rallet's technical director, Ernest Beaux, created a series of perfumes for Gabrielle Chanel, one of which was No.5. In 1926 Rallet was sold to François Coty.

Starting around 1855, when Rallet became an official supplier to the Imperial Court of Russia, the company achieved a number of distinctions for its products. Rallet later became official supplier to the courts of Persia and Montenegro. The company was awarded the state emblem of the Russian Empire four times, a very unusual distinction.
  • In 1878 at the Paris World's Fair, Rallet received high awards.
  • In 1900 at the Paris Exhibition, Rallet was awarded the Grand Prix

Tear Bottles: Sentimental Gift or Genius Marketing Ploy?

In this guide I will discuss the origins of the fanciful tear bottle, its legends and its scientific outcomes. Many people have used the term "tear bottle" to market simple scent, cosmetic or unguent bottles. Also goes by names such as tear bottle, tear catcher, lapel bottle, tear vial, boot bottle, unguentaria, bosom bottle, or unguentarium. There are also several less common spellings for lachrymatory, including lacrymatory.

Welcome!

This is not your average perfume blog. In each post, I present perfumes or companies as encyclopedic entries with as much facts and photos as I can add for easy reading and researching without all the extraneous fluff or puffery.

Please understand that this website is not affiliated with any of the perfume companies written about here, it is only a source of reference. I consider it a repository of vital information for collectors and those who have enjoyed the classic fragrances of days gone by. Updates to posts are conducted whenever I find new information to add or to correct any errors.

One of the goals of this website is to show the present owners of the various perfumes and cologne brands that are featured here how much we miss the discontinued classics and hopefully, if they see that there is enough interest and demand, they will bring back these fragrances!

Please leave a comment below (for example: of why you liked the fragrance, describe the scent, time period or age you wore it, who gave it to you or what occasion, any specific memories, what it reminded you of, maybe a relative wore it, or you remembered seeing the bottle on their vanity table, did you like the bottle design), who knows, perhaps someone from the company brand might see it.

Also, if you have any information not seen here, please comment and share with all of us.
