Flora Danica by Royal Copenhagen c1980

Flora Danica by Royal Copenhagen, a division of Swank, is a discontinued perfume still popular with its original users. This elusive fragrance is very hard to find today and commands high prices when offered for sale. The perfume was introduced in 1980 and discontinued around 1986.



The Royal Copenhagen Porcelain Manufacturing Co, who produced the Flora Danica patterned dinnerware, owned the perfume trademark at that time and gave Swank permission to use the name and images for the bottles and packaging. The fragrance was an immediate success and, as a result, Flora Danica won the Perfumer's Association 1981 FiFi Award for the best new perfume introduction of the year.

  • Gift with purchase items such as scarves and wallets with the Flora Danica images and name


Fragrance Composition:


So what does it smell like? It is classified as a floral fragrance for women. The perfume notes of Flora Danica are comprised up of 284 flowers and plants indigenous to Denmark. It starts with an aldehydic top, followed by an elegant floral heart, resting on a feminine, powdery, woody base.
  • Top notes: leafy green notes, aldehydes, bergamot, peach, jonquil, lilac, carnation
  • Middle notes: Pelargonium, geranium, rose, jasmine, white lily, lily of the valley, orris, fern, ylang ylang, magnolia, violet
  • Base notes: amber, civet, sandalwood, benzoin, vetiver, oakmoss, musk and spices

From a 1980 advertisement:
"Picture yourself in a time long past, standing in a meadow, where gentle scents of jasmine, rose, lilac, muguet, lily and carnation waft by you. Blend them together and you will find the very real fragrance of Flora Danica by Royal Copenhagen. Evoking the images of Denmark 200 years ago a gracious time when royalty and romance reigned supreme."

  • 1/4 oz Pure Parfum
  • 1/4 oz Pure Parfum Purse Spray with funnel
  • 2 oz  Spray Perfume
  • 2 oz Cologne
  • 4 oz Cologne
  • 8 oz Cologne
  • 1.5 oz Spray Cologne
  • 2.3 oz Spray Cologne
  • 6 oz perfumed body lotion
  • 6 oz dusting powder & refill
  • 6 oz bath & shower gel
  • Soap


 A 1981 advertisement reads :
"Inspired by the delicate porcelain created for the court of Denmark's King Christian. The Flora Danica Fragrance Collection is a precious blend of two hundred and eighty four flowers indigenous to Denmark...an elegant expression of a woman's style."

By this time the perfume was gaining in popularity so the prices went up. The perfume was advertised as ranging in price from $27.50 to $150 each and the colognes ranged in price from $37.50 to $69.50. With any purchase of Flora Danica perfume, you could also get a Flora Danica perfume pendant at no extra cost.

  1. why did they discontinue making it? I loved this perfume when I was in my 20's I miss it very much.
